Okay. If you’ve ever seen Jon, Keith, and I huddles at a table over a series of papers, this is what we’re working on. We are taking turns drafting for a fictional fighting league based around the idea of a sports entertainment franchise. I had begun this as a fan fiction and posted it in several places (Here is the easiest to find: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1275880/1/EMW_East_Meets_West). During college, I had little time to focus on the story and after a while the muse just dried up, but I thought the idea too good to just let it go. Using the “Draft” idea being employed by WWE at the time, I convinced Jon to join me and split the roster into two different “brands”. Eventually, after a particularly entertaining drafting session at Otaku where several others observed what we were up to we decided to add Keith into the mix as a third “owner” an began the draft process from square one. The above listing is the result so far.

needs some Final Fantasy VI characters.

I do not disagree; unfortunately none of us are familiar enough with the Final Fantasy franchise to do them justice (Much to my regret). I haven’t even started playing my copy of Dissidia yet and, sadly, none of us have the time to devote to an entire RPG anymore (Real life. Sucks, don’t it?). We put in some of FF7 because we’ve seen them in other media and can get a decent grasp on what to do with them. In short, I’m not against the idea, I just wish I knew them better.

I saw some TMNT characters in the rosters. which versions? Comics? Movies? 1987? 2003?

In my opinion, a mix between the Archie Comics and 2003 versions. You know, a nice blend. Not too silly, not too serious. Of course, it really just depends on who drafts who and what they want to do with them. For example, I just drafted Donatello to piss off Jon and really have no idea what to do with him.

It's a good list, with a few glaring omissions.

I’ve loved this ever since I started writing this about 10 years ago. Every body wants to put their 25 cents in (Inflation). I love it. It shows people are interested and thinking about this and it gets my imagination moving as well. It opens up new ideas that I either over looked or just plain never would have thought about. So, thank you.

That being said, there are sometimes problems when people want their favorite characters included. Many times the character suggested may end up on the draft roster, but no one picks him or her because they’re unfamiliar with the character. Other times the character just will not work in the confines of a sports entertainment setting. For one thing, we decided this criss-crossed universe is “In-canon”. Meaning the characters would have to act how they normally do for the most part. If a character has a secret identity or purpose, it remains a secret from everyone...at least at first. Stuff like that.

Another problem is that we can't have combatants who can only kill their opponents. This isn't a gladiatorial arena, it's sports entertainment. No killing. Dead men can't sell T-shirts.

Also, we need actual fighters. Characters who can fight in a variety of circumstances, not just in a given situation or someone who can't even throw a punch. If the character needs extensive set-up or planning to pull off an attack, he or she will be defeated rather quickly in the ring by more clever and experienced fighters. Granted we have quite a few joke characters that bend this rule, but they are to be treated as such. Any wins they have will be a fluke or a gimmick to further someone else. If said joke character is to move beyond this limitation it will be in story that they gain enough experience to do so.

So let’s take a look at these “glaring omissions”:

The Master - I sat down and watched Utopia, The Sound of Drums, and The Last of the Time Lords just to be sure I wasn't missing anything. I'm not. Actually, I was. They were really good episodes and highlighted a very interesting and entertaining villain, but he doesn't really fight, does he? All of his killing and actions were based around a grandiose "Take over the world" scheme and mostly done by other people or devices after a lengthy and involved set up. Plenty of other villains already on the roster have matched and even surpassed his achievements, but can still fight after their plans have failed. Once his scheme was thwarted, reversed, and the "Laser Screwdriver" removed from his hand he ran like a punk. True, he's the arch villain to a great heroic character, but he's really more of an event character more than an everyday fighter. He may show up as the grand master planner of some overall story arch, but until then I doubt we'll see him in the ring any time soon.

any Dalek - Could work, maybe as a joke character. Seriously, in the "Whoniverse" even a single Dalek may be all big and bad, but compared to a world where their are Kryptonians and Saiyans (Just on the extremely overkill side), they're really not all that tough. Half the roster can have fought much worse than Daleks. And may God have mercy on their hate-filled souls if they shoot a space dolphin in front of Lobo. Although, I have to admit, from a gag stand point the promos really just write themselves: "Dalek Bob, how do you think you'll do against your opponent tonight?" "I WILL EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!!!"

Captain Jack Harkness - As interesting as having an immortal omnisexual on the show would be I'm not familiar enough with the character through the limited amount I've seen him on Dr. Who and I've never seen an episode of Torchwood at all. Overall he might work, but we just don't know enough about him to use him properly.

Teddy Roosevelt - Yeah...we never really stated "No historical figures", but...No Portuguese--I mean, historical figures.

Toki Wartooth - Ha ha!...no. Maybe Dethklok from Metalocalypse can be a house band if someone wants them, but I don't see any member of it being a legitimate fighter.

Harry Dresden – Jon’s immediate reaction was “Nooooo!!!” I was unfamiliar with the character and willing to do more research on The Dresden Files, but I guess that’s just a veto then.

Rand Al Thor - Never read any of the Wheel of Time series, so...this character could work barring further investigation.

Arthur Dent - Really? The Average Joe everyman character from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy? What's he gonna do? Bleed on his opponent?

Cthulhu - Yeah...we never really stated "No Old Ones", but...No Portuguese--I mean, historical figures---I mean, just no.

Sherlock Holmes - Although I love the character and love the recent movie (I'm watching it for the second time in a row right now), I can't actually find a good place for him. There really isn't much mystery involved in these fighting federations so there goes his main draw and even if we did use the Robert Downey Jr. version, he still would've be up to par with the majority of the roster. One Skull-Crushing Finale and there goes everything he learned in elementary. Even for the guys he could beat, would YOU want to write out his exhausting thought process for every single fight tailoring it to every different opponent?

Flik the Blue Lightning - I have never heard of this character before or the series which he is from, but from what little info I could find he looks like he just might work.

Shotaro Kaneda – It is to my detriment that I have yet to watch Akira. Although from what I've read, does this character have any more skills than just being the only one who can get passed the powers of Tetsuo and physically hurt him? That's a rather limited and specific ability that would pretty much be neutralized considering none of his opponents would actually be Tetsuo.

Aragorn - I have no problem with this one. I guess none of us thought of Lord of the Rings yet and if we did, we may just be reluctant to open up yet another epic universe to this already overflowing multiverse.

Inigo Montoya - Although not a bad idea and I love the movie, his gimmick would get real old real fast. There are only so many people he can claim "You killed my father" before it gets stale. In order to untilize a character with such limited exposure, we would have to eventually re-invent the character and unless it was done well we'd lose much of what made him a good character in the first place.

Dexter Morgan - This is my veto. He can't kill anyone so there goes his main skill and MO, any one he would want to kill would most likely kill him first (Dr. Doom and Joker, for example), and many of the heroes on the roster would discover his secret pretty quick and take him down. He's a sociopathic killer not a fighter, but from what I hear he is an interesting character none-the-less.

Link - "Well, excuuuuuse me, Princess!" Actually, Jon just pulled a one-time use "Owner's Prerogative" and added him to his roster despite him not actually being on the available draft list. However, in a quirky twist after an interesting discussion, Link is being controlled by another character; a "Player" if you will.

At least one suggestion made it onto a roster so far.

Keep 'em coming this is fun.

This sounds quite interesting, and I'd like in on it if I can. Admittedly, I don't pay that much attention to Pro Wrestling, but I know who kicks ass and writes down the identities at the same time. I'll start working up a roster, but if you don't want anymore participants, I understand. Too many cooks spoils the soup. If there's any rules or regulations I should be informed of, please do so. Also, I want to read your fanfic, but the website has some kind of restriction that makes me need to fill out a survey to read any more of it. As much as I love free sites and understand the need for financial support, but I do NOT humor such vulgarity. If you could email me a copy of it, I'd very much appreciate it.

While that old saying is true in many occasions, I have actually been wanting to expand and include other people in this. Of course, it's no longer up to just me anymore. Both Jon and Keith have a say as to when, who, and how we can add more people.

That being said you have peeked my curiosity and I would at least like to see your roster. Please post it here and we'll consider that your official try out. Remember to use our rosters as templates, but many of the backstage positions are flexible.

thelaughingfool wrote:If there's any rules or regulations I should be informed of, please do so.

We really just ask that you submit a few characters to the larger draft list so the others can draw from them as well (Minimun of 5, maximum of 30). Most of the rules for character submissions are vaguely defined in the above rant, but are also quite flexible. Character submissions can be vetoed by a majority vote of the other "owners", but will be met with an open mind. There's always a chance you can change our mind with a well thought out, polite, and organized argument for their inclusion.

For example, Keith wanted Dr. Claw to be the owner for his brand. He did not have a well thought out, polite, and organized argument. But he did come up with the much more interesting and entertaining idea of Haruhi Suzumiya as the owner, so it all worked out for the best.

Oh and the combination used to form tag teams must make some sort of "sense" and you must have reasoning available if questioned. Same goes for pairing managers with a fighter.

The process of building a roster is a little more complicated however. To keep things fair and interesting we only make rosters selections when we are all together and take turns each picking from the draft roster.

How we'd work in more people without sacrificing what we've done so far is a mystery to me at the moment, but I'm definitely open to suggestions.

What fresh dickery is this?!? I do apologize. It has been a very long time since I checked this site and I had no idea fanfiction.net was pulling this kind of bull$*!# and am largely ashamed to be an unwitting party to it. Here is a harder to find place where it has been posted as well: http://www.windless.org/emw/. Actually I like this one even more because it had an actual fan section...and actual fans!!!

Please enjoy and forgive the errors. I had no proof reader at all and just posted as soon as a chapter was finished.

If you or anyone else has any questions please feel free to ask.

After much discussion we have a few more questions regarding your inclusion into our project. Please see us at the next Anime showing with any changes or revisions to your roster and any questions you might have.

Thank you.

Okay. My bad, Sean. Turns out all three of us had personal matters to attend to last Anime and I've been sick for the past week.

Also my previous post wasn't meant to sound as negative as it might have and one or more of us was supposed to clarify it last Saturday. Again, sorry, my bad.

Overall we are pleased with your roster. There are a couple we would request clarification on and a few critiques here and there, but by and large we like what we see. It has potential.

There is one large request that has been brought to my attention however. As we wish to eventually start doing more with these rosters and have all been part of writing groups with each other before, we would all like to see an example of your writing style and ability. Preferably something with comparable action.

From here the choice is up to you. You can post your writing here on the forum and we can continue the process here or you can bring us a copy and we can continue this conversation at the next Otaku meeting. Or any criss-cross combination thereof.

What do you say?

Updated as of April 19, 2011.

And no, that Minerva M. (Co-GM of EMW Blank) is not who you think it is.
