All money made from raffle will be donated to American Red Cross for relief effort for Japan.

Please invite everybody that you can. The more, the better chances of raising more money.

Message from Leon: "Hello, all!

This is your President speaking, and no I don't mean the one in DC. This is the first time I've addressed all of you this way, and I'm hoping this reaches all of you.

As I'm sure you're very aware, Japan has been hit extremely hard by natural disaster in the last week. Having family in that country, I was more than a bit worried, and while I was relieved that my family are safe and sound, I can't help but be given pause by what has been happening and to know how many people have lost their lives.

Many of you have asked about donation efforts, and with this being the land that has given us much of what we enjoy (and is the raison d'etre for this club), there's something we can do. So, for the next two raffles, all of the money that is made from the raffle is going to be donated to the American Red Cross, to go for relief efforts. If you'd like to make a donation without doing the raffle, then that's welcome as well! So, at the next couple of meetings, I encourage you to bring as many friends as you can to the anime club and participate.

Let's do what we can to help out.

Leon Wilborn Otaku Anime President"

Also Jen's birthday celebration. The current plan is to meet in the Schoolcraft parking lot at about 8:30am, leaving at about 9:00, and carpool up to the Festival. Unknown if we'll stay 'till close (7pm), but plan on a pretty full day.

If you would like to attend, please sign up either on the forums or at the 9/25 anime screening, and let us know if you want to carpool! If you don't sign up, we might not have space for you.

Cost is $20 for admission, and please plan on paying the driver something for gas money if you're carpooling.

8/19/2010 -- Otaku Movie Night Out: RiffTrax Live vs. Reefer Madness

So. Reefer Madness was a 1930s cautionary tale about the dangers of marijuana that was hijacked by another director and turned into a sensationalist film. Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett of Mystery Science Theater 3000 fame are going to riff the movie, live, broadcast to theaters around the US. Clearly this is worth a look.

Join us at the Livonia AMC 20 on Thursday 8/19 at 8pm!

There are a couple of two-week gaps between screenings coming up, and in the meantime we're going to get ourselves out of the Lower Waterman for a while. Join us at Dave & Buster's in Utica (here is a Google map from S'craft) on July 10th at 6pm for food that is not pizza and some rousing children's card g--I mean arcade games! They apparently have a dinner special for $17 that comes with one of 11 entrees and a gaming card worth $10.

If you'd like to carpool, meet in Schoolcraft's North parking lot (where most people park for Anime) at 5pm. If you're willing to drive, please let us know in the Summer Field Trip thread on the forums. People riding along, it would of course be courteous to split the cost of gas between everyone in your car.

If you can't get to S'craft and/or generally need a ride, post in the forum and we'll see if special arrangements can be made.

Animeriffs: Mystery Science Theater, level uppu!

There are plenty of anime that are stupid enough to cause physical pain. The apparent mission of Animeriffs--a new project by the brilliantly deranged minds in our Doujinshi Circle--is to make it hurt so good. So far they've skewered the first episodes of Rose of Versailles and Needless, the later of which we screened at the 12/5 screening to excellent reaction. Check out their hilarious overdubbing on our YouTube page!

(Jon notes that he actually liked what he's seen of Rose of Versailles. But it's still... quite riffable.)

Eureka Seven: Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers is showing at the Livonia AMC 20 on September 24th at 7:30pm. Not just a compressed retelling of the series, the movie is a complete re-imagining of the Eureka Seven story. This is an English-dubbed release. There's also a thread for the event on the forums.
